Sáoirse Van Merkom: My TradFest Experience

I've been attending Belfast TradFest for many years, immersing myself in everything from masterclasses and sessions to céilís and concerts. This year, for the first time, I decided to experience the festival from a different perspective by volunteering. It turned out to be an incredible opportunity to meet a variety of wonderful people, including fellow volunteers, visitors, students, and musicians.

As a volunteer, my responsibilities included working at the ticket office for concerts, helping guests find their seats, and offering support whenever needed. Along the way, I was fortunate enough to witness some outstanding performances, such as the Belfast Harp Festival, Moya Brennan, the Seán Maguire Ómós concert — which featured some of the finest fiddle players from across Ireland, Jiggy, and BIIRD, an 11-piece all-female band that performed their debut gig at the festival.

I also had the pleasure of being interviewed by Lynette Fay to share my TradFest experience live on BBC Radio Ulster before the Lúnasa concert in Empire Music Hall.

Over the course of the week, I gained invaluable experience and made lasting memories. Every moment was a genuine joy. It’s difficult to pick a favourite part because each event and interaction brought something special. My initial motivation for joining the volunteer team was to become more involved in the Irish music scene and attend concerts, but the experience far exceeded my expectations. I have no doubt that this won’t be my last time volunteering for Belfast TradFest.

I wholeheartedly encourage others to get involved and experience it for themselves. There’s a unique sense of warmth and belonging that filled the festival atmosphere. Everyone was kind, grateful, and easy to get along with, making me feel truly at home.
